Metadata: 2013, EcoNorth, Blyth Demonstration Site, Reptile and Butterfly Survey
Abstract:
EcoNorth Ltd was commissioned by NaREC to undertake reptile and butterfly surveys on an area of land along the road between East Sleekburn and Cambois to the north of the Blyth Estuary; adjacent to, and including parts of, the former Blyth coal fired power station site. The survey area follows the route of a cable connection between the landfall of the power cables from the proposed Blyth offshore wind demonstrator site at Cambois beach, and a proposed electricity substation. The survey area also includes the access route to an existing substation. A 30m buffer surrounding the site boundary was also surveyed. The surveys were commissioned following an Extended Phase 1 habitat survey including a desk study which identified the potential presence of both reptiles and notable butterfly species.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | EcoNorth Ltd was commissioned in March 2013 to undertake a Phase 1 habitat survey, extended to identify any use for the site by protected and notable species, on an area of land along the road between East Sleekburn and Cambois to the north of the Blyth Estuary; adjacent to, and including parts of, the former Blyth coal fired power station site. The survey was undertaken to identify any ecological constraints or potential ecological constraints to the route of a proposed grid connection for the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Wind Farm. Following the Extended Phase 1 habitat survey and taking into account consultation with Northumberland County Council it was determined that both reptile and butterfly surveys were required to inform the proposed grid connection project, as suitable habitats for both reptiles and notable butterfly species were present and previous records of both reptiles and notable butterfly species were present in the immediate vicinity of the site. Reptile surveys were undertaken by John Thompson MCIEEM on 7 separate dates between May and September 2013 in accordance with survey guidelines detailed by Froglife (1999). Butterfly surveys were undertaken at approximately fortnightly intervals during the period May to late August and timed to cover the flight periods for the two butterfly species of interest (dingy skipper Erynnis tages and grayling Hipparchia semele). Walked transects were used to identify the range of butterflies present and gain an indication of their abundance and distribution across the site. No evidence of reptiles was identified on the site or immediate surrounds and therefore this report concludes that there are no ecological constraints due to the presence of reptiles. Butterfly surveys identified the presence of grayling butterfly on and adjacent to the site. Due to the presence of this species a number of recommendations are made to ensure this species is conserved within the proposed grid connection development. No dingy skipper were reported, however the habitats surrounding the site appeared to be suitable for this species comprising of a mixture of open basking habitats and including some extensive areas of the preferred larval food plant of birds foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus. |
