Abstract:
The study looked to elucidate patterns in flight intensity, direction and altitude of species considered to be especially important in Liverpool Bay, namely the Common Scoter and the Red-throated Diver. This was needed in order to evalutate the potential impacts of Offshore Wind Farms on these species which requires not only the number of birds present but also their flight patterns. Radar recordings were backed up by visual observations, particulary around dawn and dusk. Observations were made during two periods of 6 days each, from 22nd February to 3rd March and from 11th March to 18th March, all in 2006.

In order to understand the flight movements of scoters in the area, observations started out close to the main inshore aggregation, and were continued further offshore at larger distances from this main inshore area.
