Metadata: 2011, Entec, Blyth NaRec Offshore Demonstration Site, Contaminated Sediments
Abstract:
Entec was commissioned by NaREc to assess the spatial distributions of chemical components and associated characteristics in sediments at the proposed demonstration test facility. The aim is to identify areas of enhanced concentrations of contaminants, and allow interpretation in terms of location and relative degrees of contamination. This information will then be used to in the ES to assess potential impact on benthic fauna and wider marine environment. The need for this survey arises due to the proximity of the wind farm arrays to an offshore spoil ground and the historical disposal of contaminants (e.g. dredge spoil, waste fly ash, and sewage sludge) in the sea along this stretch of coast. The history of disposal at the site increases the potential for local sediments to act as a sink for contamination. Construction activities associated with cable lying and turbine installation may release sediment into the water column which could be deposited in adjacent, potentially low contaminant areas.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The proposed Narec test facility, off the coast of Northumberland, will enable developers and manufacturers to identify best practice approaches across the supply chain for new turbine technologies. It will provide facilities for the testing and demonstration of prototype and preproduction turbines as well as the opportunity to study alternative foundation types, construction methods, remote monitoring etc. The 20 km2 site was chosen because it mimics the characteristic topography and water depths associated with Round 3 wind farm sites (Figure 1.1). Infrastructure will be developed for and up to 99.9 MW grid-connected demonstration platforms with the capability of housing up to 25 turbines. It is proposed that the turbine bases will be laid out in up to 5 arrays (although 3 is more likely), with 5 turbine bases per array. Each turbine array will be positioned in a different water depth and at a different distance from the coast. Proposed water depths range from 15 to 55m and proposed distances from the coast range from 1.8 to 13.8 km. The EIA for any offshore wind farm requires an assessment of the contaminants in the sediment which may be mobilised by piling. There is a large spoil disposal ground adjacent to the proposed wind farm site; in which Array 3 will be located, hence the levels of contaminants in these sediments may be high.
