Metadata: 2004, BACTEC International, Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, Explosive Ordnance Threat Assessment
Abstract:
The Site. A seventy five turbine windfarm is to be constructed off the North Norfolk coast, to the North of the Sheringham Shoal and just inside the 12 nautical mile (nm) limit. The cables will come ashore near to Weybourne. This Study. BACTEC has completed an Unexploded Ordnance Threat Assessment of the Project and the proposed Site. Proposed Works. The foundations for the turbines will be a mono-pile or a number of piles that will penetrate the seabed to an estimated maximum depth of 25m. Cables will be buried in the seabed to a depth of 3m. The UXO Threat. Evidence was found of past military activity in the area. These operations involved coastal defences and minefields along the coastline and in the North Sea to protect WWII Convoy Routes. The Germans laid sea mines in the area from aircraft, ships and submarines with devastating effect. Whilst many of these operations were outside the immediate area of the Site, the ensuing effects of the sea, weather and fishing may have transported and buried UXO in the area. The Anti Aircraft Gunnery School at Weybourne will have sown an offshore area with unexploded munitions. Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Risk. The risk from WWII UXO is considered to be as follows: Mines - Medium, Aircraft Delivered Bombs - Low, Anti Aircraft Munitions - Low. In the circumstances Risk Mitigation Measures are advised. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | BACTEC has completed an UXO Threat Assessment of the Site proposed for the Sheringham Offshore Windfarm. In the searches for information, evidence has been found of past military activity in the area. The study of these activities confirmed that UXO could have been left on the beaches and on the seabed. Clearance Records indicate that not all of the WWII landmines were recovered. In the ensuing years, the actions of the tides, weather and fishing could have also moved UXO into the area and covered them on the sea bottom. The sea could also have moved UXO from ship wrecks into the area. On considering the Risk to the construction personnel and equipment, BACTEC advises that Risk Mitigation Measures are taken during the construction of the Sheringham Offshore Windfarm. |
