Metadata: 2012-2014, Natural Research (Projects) Ltd, Westray South, Marine Wildlife Survey
Abstract:
Surveys of seabirds, marine mammals and basking shark (for convenience these are collectively hereafter referred to as ??marine wildlife) undertaken in the Westray Firth to inform SSER'??s proposed Westray South tidal device array. Boat-based baseline surveys of the Westray South Survey Area commenced in January 2012. These surveys will inform the environmental assessment of the proposed Westray South Tidal Development project.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | 2012-2014, Natural Research (Projects) Ltd, Westray South, Marine Wildlife Survey |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 48e75e5bcdebbe36eaaf05e1ec58ebbd |
| Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | MDE-CES-34-439 |
| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2012-01-01 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2014-03-13 |
| Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | unknown |

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The ornithological interest of the site will be characterised by conducting year-round ESAS surveys. It is intended at this stage that these surveys will continue for two years, in line with SNHâ??s generic guidance. However, before a final decision is made about collecting data in year 2, the merits of undertaking a second year of baseline characterisation studies will be reviewed and discussed with SNH/MS in light of data collected in the first year. Boat-based surveys of marine mammals and basking shark will be conducted alongside but independently from the surveys for ESAS surveys. Passive Acoustic Monitoring Surveys (PAMS) will be undertaken using a hydrophone array towed behind the survey vessel which will collect data on cetacean vocalisations throughout the course of the boat based visual surveys. The data collected will complement the visual data obtained for odontocete cetaceans (particularly porpoises). |
