Metadata: 2003-2004, Environmentally Sustainable Systems Ltd, Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm, Bird Monitoring
Abstract:
Between December 2003 and November 2004, defined as Year 3 of this study, a total of seventeen boat surveys of birds and marine mammals were carried out around the Kentish Flats Wind Farm site. Approximately one third of these covered the wind farm site, the buffer and the control area, whilst the remainder covered only the wind farm site and the buffer. Additionally three aerial surveys were carried out in Year 3 over a wider area extending beyond the wind farm site, and another aerial survey was undertaken on 5 December 2004. The February survey took place over three days, though all of the wind farm, buffer zone and control areas were covered on 15 February 2004. Previously, between October 2001 and November 2003 (Years 1 and 2) forty boat surveys of birds and marine mammals had been carried out around the Kentish Flats Wind farm site. Over these earlier periods a total of five aerial surveys were carried out over a wider area extending beyond the wind farm site. This Monitoring report in this series analyses the results of the 12 months of boat data collected from December 2003 to November 2004 for the Kentish Flats wind farm project, and aerial data collected over that period at the wind farm site and the surrounding area.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Population estimates with means and standard errors for the wind farm site and buffer zone have been derived from data from each of the 57 boat surveys between October 2001 and November 2004. Standard errors have been presented, which have been updated and improved by the larger (3-year) dataset. As in the previous monitoring report, comparison of changes in numbers over the three years of boat survey data is difficult because there is seasonal variation and survey dates do not match between years. Three-year mean monthly population estimates, with standard errors, have been calculated for the wind farm site and buffer zone for species groups. Comparisons of population densities for all birds between the 12 transects used in the boat surveys (8 study area and 4 control transects) again revealed highly significant differences in population densities between transects within the study area, and between the study area and the control. While monthly means were slightly higher for most transects, transect 6 still had a higher density of birds than the majority of other transects and the control transects generally had fewer birds. |
