Metadata: 2011-2012, Precision Marine Survey Ltd., Zone 3 - Dogger Bank, Creyke Beck Inshore Trammel Net Survey
Abstract:
Finfish Survey of Bridlington Bay (August 2011, January and March 2012), in relation to the Inshore Cable Corridor for the Dogger Bank Creyke Beck Projects This survey was designed to evaluate the natural fish ecology, and commercial fisheries utilising gears that are better suited to the capture and retention of species present in the area and such a survey reflects the type of finfish gears used by local fishermen. The results of which provide additional baseline information with regard to the diversity and abundance of species utilising the area which may be affected by the cable laying phase, and which may potentially disrupt the migration of an unknown density of fish during this period. Such an evaluation would assist in determining whether the cable route is important to fish migrations and as a consequence commercial fin fishing.

Such an evaluation would assist in determining whether the cable route is important to fish migrations and as a consequence commercial fin fishing. Prior to the start of the surveys, tidal and weather patterns were assessed in order to optimise sampling effort, spring tidal cycles and strong onshore winds reduce the efficiency of netting, consequently medium to neap tides and slighter sea states are ideal. In order to replicate current fishing practices, the Bridlington based Mirage II was employed to carry out the survey. Of equal importance is that similar types of gear currently being used in the fishery are deployed, in this instance, trammel nets. The nets comprised two panels of differing mesh sizes, with an outer mesh of 635mm and an inner panel of 100mm mesh, in order to account for the smaller size classes using the inshore area. Each monofilament net deployed was 100m in length with a depth of 10ft (30 meshes). The data collected were presented using ESRI ArcGIS software |
