Metadata: 2012 - 2013 Zone 9 Celtic Array, Hidef Aerial Bird Survey
Abstract:
HiDef Aerial Survey Ltd. was contracted by Celtic Array to carry out a series of digital video aerial surveys of marine mammals, sharks and birds in the Irish Sea Zone over the duration of April 2012 to March 2013 on a monthly basis. Special emphasis was placed on survey with the North East Potential Development Area and the Rhiannon Wind Farm. Information from this aerial survey will be used to inform the Rhiannon Wind Farm Environmental Statement and, if required for the other Potential Development Areas Environmental Statements. Results of the survey has been documented and written in the reports: Irish Sea Zone, Rhiannon Wind Farm and NE Potential Development Area : Interim report on aerial surveys for April to August 2012, Corresponding Centrica Document No : R3-D-EN-013-0006-501028-002 Irish Sea Zone, Rhiannon Wind Farm and NE Potential Development Area: Final report on aerial surveys from April 2012 to March 2013, Corresponding Centrica Document No: SE-D-EV-013-0008-000000-003 And Irish Sea Zone, Rhiannon Wind Farm and North East Potential Development Area: Final report on supplementary aerial surveys from June 2013 to July 2013 , Corresponding Centrica Document No: SE-D-EV-013-0008-000000-004 Available Datasets : 1. ArcGIS files (mpk, . shapefiles), 2. Drawings (pdf, jpeg), 3. Reports (.doc, .xls, .txt, csv),

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Five digital video aerial surveys were flown during the months of April, May, June, July and August 2012, and the results of the video analysis were presented in the report : Interim report on aerial surveys for April to August 2012 , Centrica document number : R3-D-EN-013-0006-501028-002 . Three digital video aerial surveys were flown on June 19th, July 8th and July 18th 2013; the results of the analysis are presented in the report: Final report on supplementary aerial surveys from June 2013 to July 2013, Centrica document number: SE-D-EV-013-0008-000000-004 . Twelve digital video aerial surveys were flown during the calendar months between April2012 and March 2013; the results of the analysis are presented in the report: Final report on aerial surveys from April 2012 to March 2013, Centrica document number: SE-D-EV-013-0008-000000-003 The results show the survey transects flown, the numbers of each species and species groups recorded during the surveys, the population estimates for each of these in the Irish Sea Zone(ISZ), the Rhiannon Wind Farm and the North East Potential Development Area. The distributions of the most abundant species were plotted using kernel density estimation to generate the density surface maps, and the flying heights and directions of the most abundant species were presented Distribution data was generated for marine mammals, sharks and birds within the Irish Sea Zone that helped to assess where the most sensitive species occur within the Zone, and also within the proposed Rhiannon Wind Farm and NE Potential Development Area. More importantly, by using density surface models, it was possible to assess the number of animals likely to be affected within defined sea areas. Additional information was collected on the height above the sea of flying birds to assess whether they may collide with wind turbines, and also of flight direction of birds which might be flying to or from specific breeding sites on the coast near the ISZ. |
