Metadata: 2014, Natural Research Projects, Skerries, Seabird Pilot Study
Abstract:
SeaGeneration Wales (SGW), a wholly owned subsidiary of Marine Current Turbines, is required to undertake pre-installation monitoring of seabirds in the vicinity of the Skerries Tidal Stream Array (the Project) off Anglesey. This 10MW tidal stream project received consent in 2012 but installation work has not yet commenced. A requirement of the Marine Licence is that undertake appropriate pre-installation monitoring. The wider programme of monitoring work is considered in detail in the project’s environmental monitoring and adaptive management plan (EMAMP) (MCT, 2014). The ornithological aspects of the EMAMP are set out in detail in the Seabird Monitoring Plan (SBMP) contained therein and this describes the seabird monitoring required to meet the Marine Licence consent conditions, this includes the undertaking of pre-installation seabird monitoring. It was agreed by the Skerries Science Group in February 2014 that the initial phase of the pre-installation monitoring would be to undertake a 4-month vantage point pilot survey to trial survey methods for pre-installation bird surveys to understand if the VP methodology can acquire appropriate data.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Surveys were conducted from an elevated VP on Carmel Head. A range of candidate VPs were identified and evaluated on the reconnaissance visit in August 2013. The VP that was selected for the pilot study was at grid reference SH29038 /92721 this was considered to have the best combination of proximity to the Project’s development area and suitable elevation. This location is 26 m above sea level, approximately 50 m back from the shoreline and approximately 1.7 km from the centre of the development area. The VP was located close to a public footpath and took approximately 40 minutes walking time to reach from the small National Trust car park at grid ref SH303/914. The land is owned by the National Trust. Carmel Head is located to the south of the development area thus an observer views the survey area from north-west through north to north-east. This is ideal for observations as it means the sun is behind the observer thus maximising contrast and minimising glare of the sea through most of the daylight hours. |
