Metadata: 2022 - 2023, Cefas, POSEIDON, United Kingdom Benthic Survey
Abstract:
POSEIDON aims to create a revised system which describes environmental risk across England and Wales, that can be applied to offshore wind (and other marine sectors) planning. It is the intention of the project that this will become integrated with marine plans and help offshore wind decisions to comprehensively factor in risks to consent and risks to the environment. This series contains benthic surveys undertaken by several organisations contracted by Cefas to contribute to Natural England’s POSEIDON project. The project was split into five Lots based on geographic regions of water around Great Britain. For each Lot several survey methods were utilised to create an environmental baseline data and updated spatial models for key species (receptors), assemblages, and a suite of ecological metrics (diversity, functional traits).

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The scope of works for the survey operations included several different methods of data collection: â?¢ Grabs for macrofaunal and particle size analysis (PSA); â?¢ Grabs for eDNA and OCN analysis; and â?¢ Ad-hoc Visual surveys using a Go-Pro at failed stations i.e. when grab sampling failed. The methodology for each of these aspects are described in POSEIDON Benthic Sampling Protocols Document, Version 1.0. Planning Offshore Wind Strategic Environmental Impact Decisions. POSEIDON Lot 1 comprised of 375 stations extending from offshore of Norfolk in the South to offshore of the Firth of Forth in the North (Figure 1). Stations were sampled for subsequent macrobenthic, sediment Particle Size Distribution (PSD), environmental DNA (eDNA), and sediment carbon (OCN) analyses. Stations were sampled in line with the POSEIDON Benthic Sampling Protocol V2.2. Sediment samples were collected using a 0.1m2 and later processed for sediment particle size and macrofauna (1mm sieve) following standard NMBAQC methods: samples were processed for sediment particle size (PSA) and macrofauna (1mm sieve) following standard NMBAQC methods: |
