Abstract:
FUGRO LIMITED have contracted BACTEC International Ltd to carry out an outline unexploded ordnance threat assessment for intrusive geotechnical survey at a sandbank off Whitstable known as Kentish Flats. It has been assessed that there is the potential for unexploded ordnance (UXO) to lie within the Kentish Flats. The three most likely sources of UXO are: a. Air dropped bombs, either dumped or used in action against vessels during WW2. b. Naval vessel ordnance, such as shells and torpedoes. c. Moored or floating sea mines The H&SAW Act and CDM regulations do not specifically require a search for unexploded ordnance. However there is an obligation on those responsible for intrusive works to ensure that a comprehensive threat assessment is undertaken and risk mitigation measures are made with regard to all underground hazards on site.
