Metadata: 2017, EGS, Blyth Demonstration Site, Detailed Geophysical Survey
Abstract:
EGS (International) Ltd carried out a survey for Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Ltd (BODL), offshore of Blyth, northeast England. The objectives of the geophysical survey were to acquire data over Array 2 dredge dump area and 250m radius on 5 WTG locations. Geophysical operations were undertaken using multibeam echosounder (MBES) and side scan sonar (SSS) equipment. The MBES survey was conducted onboard the EGS Watchful, operating out of the Port of Blyth. The vessel mobilised on 25th May 2017, with MBES operations completed by 28th May 2017. Due to a fault with the vessel’s port engine, SSS acquisition could not be carried out safely so a local vessel of opportunity (MTS Taktow) was utilised. The vessel was mobilised alongside Blyth on 30th May 2017, with acquisition completed on 31st May 2017.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The EGS Watchful was mobilised alongside Blyth, northeast England, on 25th May 2017. Following alongside mobilisation, the vessel sailed to commence at-sea verifications and calibrations. The vessel was deemed operational at 12:45 on 26th May 2017, at which point the vessel immediately began survey operations within the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator dredge dump area. The EGS Watchful is permanently mobilised with a suite of hydrographic and geophysical survey equipment which is regularly calibrated and verified. Full details of the equipment calibration and verifications are presented in Appendix B, Mobilisation Report. MBES data acquisition within the Blyth Offshore Demonstrator dredge dump area commenced on 26th May 2017 and was completed the same day. During operations, an oil leak was identified. On inspection by an engineer on 27th May 2017, a problem was found with the port engine, but the starboard engine remained fully operational. Data acquisition resumed on the 28th May 2017 conducting MBES only operations over the WTG locations with support from a local tug, the MTS Taktow, as a standby vessel. With the EGS Watchful operating on a single engine, operations with towed equipment were not possible due to the limited manoeuvrability of the vessel. Therefore, the MTS Taktow was mobilised alongside Blyth on 30th May 2017 with a GNSS positioning system, survey grade gyro compass and side scan sonar equipment to allow side scan sonar data acquisition over the WTG locations and thus complete the scope of work. |
