Abstract:
Fugro Geoconsulting Limited (FGCLTD) was requested by BOWL to perform a geotechnical investigation at the site to provide soils information to assist in the foundation design of the proposed wind farm. The work was performed from the vessel MV Gargano from 31 December 2010 to 09 January 2011. The objective of this investigation was to provide geotechnical information to assess the soil conditions for the proposed wind farm. The report presents the following information: (i) Details of the geotechnical site investigation, including descriptions of the methods employed for the in-situ testing and sampling; (ii) Results of the offshore in-situ testing and sampling; (iii) Details of the offshore laboratory testing that has been performed (iv) Results of the offshore laboratory testing performed; (v) Preliminary borehole logs and descriptions of the soil strata.

Objectives were to provide geotechnical information to assess the soil conditions for the proposed Beatrice Offshore wind farm.Drilling operations onboard the geotechnical drilling vessel M/V Gargano were performed using a straight flush rotary system connected to a heave compensator. A 4.5 inch inner diameter API drillpipe was used with a five-wing open drag bit for all drilling operations. The water depth at the beginning of each borehole was checked by noting the length of the drillpipe at touchdown of the bit onto the clamps of the Fugro’s SEACLAM®. During drilling each borehole was flushed and stabilised using a mixture of seawater and drilling mud (Guar Gum). The drilling system used during the soil investigation only allowed inspection of the soil at depths at which samples were taken. In intervening zones, the soil characteristics were estimated from the in-situ test data, the rate of drilling, the bit load, mud pressure and the general behaviour of the drillstring. |
