Metadata: 2020-2021, EDF Renewables, Blyth Demonstration Site, Bird and Marine Mammal Monitoring Survey Array 2 (Year 3)
Abstract:
Year 3 Birds & Marine Mammal Post-Construction surveys and assessment for the operational Blyth Offshore Demonstrator Array 2 wind farm. The 2020-21 bird and marine mammal boat surveys covered the inner turbine array (described as ‘Array 2’in the project ES) plus a 3km buffer, with a 1km transect separation (as agreed with NE and the MMO). The survey area and survey transects are shown in Figure 1. Alternate transects follow the same route as those used in the EIA baseline (when a 2km separation was adopted), within the inner array 3km buffer zone, with an additional transect inserted between each. The total transect length is 53km, running approximately east-west.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | he main transect surveys required to satisfy the marine licence were conducted following the guidance of the standard Seabirds at Sea methodology (Komdeur et al., 1992) and the COWRIE (Camphuysen et al., 2004) guidance on seabird census techniques, maintaining the surveys using the same methods as previously for consistency. Two surveys per month were undertaken through the main period of interest for auks (March-October). Analysis of the ES/SEI baseline data showed that this period captures 92% guillemots, 93% razorbills and 98% puffins (as well as 94% gannets). After an initial survey in March 2020, surveys had to be suspended until July 2020 as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. Following agreement with MMO, the missing March-June surveys were completed in 2021, so that the full programme of surveys was undertaken but over two rather than a single year. Surveys were conducted using a Visual Line Transect method with sub-bands and with snapshots for flying birds. Detailed information on species, sex, and where feasible, foraging behaviour and flying height, were recorded. The 2020-21 marine mammal surveys followed the same methods as used in the ES baseline surveys, with a dedicated marine mammal observer scanning a 180° arc looking forward from the survey vessel. The survey details and transect route were as described above in relation to the bird surveys, which were carried out simultaneously. The positions of all animals encountered relative to the survey vessel were recorded, with information on species, number and behaviour. The survey team comprised a single dedicated marine mammal surveyor on the survey vessel (sufficient given the low level of marine mammal activity recorded previously in the survey area and in 2020-21). |
