Metadata: Across Wales Diving Monitoring Project (2004)
Abstract:
The initial 2 year project was a developmental trial for establishing (i) Methods, (ii) Recording protocols. (iii) Deployment strategies, (iv) Repeatability, (v) Site marking and relocation, (vi) Quality Control for site monitoring. Following on from the initial 2 year project a longer-term project has been established to gather data in order to assess the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) sites for their 'favourable conservation status'. The concept of favourable conservation status is central to the EC Habitats Directive. These SAC sites included five marine Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) around the Welsh coast though only four of these (Menai Strait and Conwy Bay; Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau; Cardigan Bay; and Pembrokeshire Marine) have 'reefs' listed as Annex I 'features'. An ongoing programme of monitoring the reefs in each of these SACs follows the establishment programme.

| Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Across Wales Diving Monitoring Project (2004) |
| Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | 2004 CCW/Pelagial/Sea-Scope Cardigan Bay cSAC sublittoral monitoring survey MRCCW3010000000B |
| File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | NRW_DS109743 |

| Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
| Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2004-05-17 |
| End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2006-03-31 |
| Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | annually |
| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. An ongoing programme of monitoring the reefs in each of these SACs follows the establishment programme. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | A variety of methodologies has been designed for monitoring subtidal reef across the SACs, these include diver quadrats and transects, capture of information on images and digital video and the collection of data from loggers. Detailed information about each of the methodologies can be found in the draft CCW Marine Monitoring Report 25b 'Across Wales Diving Monitoring Project Volume 2: Standard operating procedures'. CCW undertook a programme of surveillance on the Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau SAC between 1997 and 2001. These monitoring trials formed the basis of the Terms of Reference for this programme. Further information can be found in the Marine Monitoring Handbook (Davie et al. 2001). Metadata for repeatable sites is described separately. An unrepeated groud-truthing survey was also completed for Cardigan Bay in 2004 in conjunction with the 2004-2005 Across Wales drop-down video survey. Information about the survey can be found in the CCW Marine Monitoring Report 25a 'Across Wales Diving Monitoring Project Volume 1: Site descriptions and results'. |
