Metadata: 2013, Anatec Ltd., Lincs Offshore Wind Farm, Updated Cable Anchoring Risk Assessment
Abstract:
Anatec were commissioned by Centrica Renewable Energy Ltd to assess the risk of damage to their planned cable route in The Wash from vessels dragging anchor and from emergency anchoring. This report presents an update to the risk assessment, using 12 months of AIS data collected from September 2011 to August 2012. This report summarises the data sources, methodology and results. The results are presented in terms of the annual frequency of an anchor dragging over the cable or a vessel dropping anchor on the cable; and the frequency of cable damage, based on the as-laid burial depth of the cable and the estimated anchor penetration depth.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Anatec were commissioned by Centrica Renewable Energy Ltd to assess the risk of damage to their planned cable route in The Wash from vessels dragging anchor and from emergency anchoring. | Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | COLLRISK models perform calculations within a Geographical Information System (GIS) with relevant shipping and operational data (e.g., wind direction, sea-state, etc.) input to the calculations stored within a pre-defined grid of cells encompassing the area of interest. The Anchor Dragging model was used to work out the probability that a vessel in a predefined area of interest will drag anchor over a cable route and cause damage. The cable route was divided into segments and the area encompassing the vessels anchoring in The Wash divided into an exposure grid. The frequency of vessels dragging anchor over a segment of the cable route is equal to the frequency that vessels drag anchor from the exposure grid cell multiplied with the probability that the vessel drifts in the direction of the cable route segment (based on wind direction probability) and the probability that the vessel fails to recover in time (based on the time to drift from the cell to the cable and the estimated time for ship recovery). This is multiplied with the probability that the dragged anchor damages the cable to find the risk of cable damage/impairment for the segment. |
