Metadata: 2008-2009, Osiris Projects, Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm, Hydrographic and Geophysical Surveys
Abstract:
Osiris Projects were commissioned by Npower Renewables to undertake a major hydrographic and geophysical survey across a large area of seabed in the southern North Sea. This area lies between 33km and 48km off the east Lincolnshire coast and between 48km and 60km of the north Norfolk coast. The survey was substantially completed during the period 9th July 2008 to 22nd October 2008, using MV ‘Freja’ as the main vessel collecting bathymetric, side scan sonar, subbottom profiling and magnetometer data, with MV ‘Barinthus’ as a secondary vessel collecting bathymetric data only. MV ‘Freja’ was equipped with dual-frequency single beam and multi-beam echo sounders, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiling and marine magnetometer systems. MV ‘Barinthus’ was utilised for bathymetric infill lines only and was equipped with single and multi-beam echo sounders. Primary positioning during the survey was provided by the use of CSI Vector sensors on each of the vessels. During early 2009, RPS Energy were commissioned to prepare a brief outline of any remaining and additional survey requirements for Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm and the adjacent Silver Pit area, to the west of Triton Knoll. The Silver Pit reconnaissance survey was carried out using the survey vessel MV ‘Lia’ and was completed during the period 1st to 13th March 2009, with recorded delays for severe weather and engine problems. The remaining section of the Triton Knoll area was surveyed using both MV ‘Lia’ and MV ‘Freja’, during the period 14th to 31st March 2009, with further recorded delays for severe weather. The work included a narrow strip of seabed between Silver Pit and the original western extents of Triton Knoll North, called the Triton Knoll extension area. Additional, high-resolution side scan sonar surveys were carried out at the locations of a number of ‘significant targets’ (possible wrecks), which were identified during the 2008 survey.
