Metadata: Radionuclides data within sediment cores collected in the North Sea between 2023 and 2024 and the Celtic Sea during 2023
Abstract:
These sample data are from sediment cores collected using a NIOZ (Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research design) Box Corer during 3 surveys conducted by the Research Vessel (RV) Cefas Endeavour. Samples were analysed for and data presented for lead-210 ( 210Pb), polonium-210 (210Po), caesium-137 (137Cs), radium-226 (226Ra), radium-228 (228Ra), and potassium-40 (40K)and used to help validate the range of sediment accumulation rates observed in the top 30 cm of the core (e.g., 137Cs) and assess any potential mineralogical changes across the studied core segment (e.g., 40K).

At each station within a survey a NIOZ Box Corer was deployed collecting cores up to a maximum sediment depth of 30cm. A metal cylinder was used to take 10cm diameter sub core which were sliced at 2cm intervals for CEND072023 and CEND172023, and 1cm for CEND092024. Between 27 and 34 g of selected slices was mechanically compressed in a uniform plastic container that was then sealed and kept for at least for 21 days prior to high resolution gamma spectrometry analysis (ORTEC Broad Energy Germanium detector (BEGe), USA) to determine indirectly the activity concentration levels of radium-226 (226Ra) or supported lead-210 (210Pb), via its decay product lead-214 at 352 keV. Total 210Pb (i.e., sum of unsupported and supported fractions of 210Pb) was also determined indirectly via alpha spectrometry by measuring 210Po, a decay product of 210Pb in all slices. In more detail, approximately 0.3 g of freeze-dried material was spiked with a known amount of 209Po radiotracer (NPL, UK) and digested using 12 ml of a mixture of HNO3/HF (3/1) in a microwave system (CEM Mars 6, USA). After neutralisation using saturated H3BO3 and evaporation to dryness, each sample solution was taken up to 25 ml 0.5M HCl solution to allow for the spontaneous deposition of 209Po and 210Po on a silver disc for 5 hours at 90°C. Each silver disc was finally counted via alpha spectrometry for up to 5 days (ORTEC Octête Plus, USA). A data point can potentially have multiple Quality Flags (QFlags) which will be semicolon separated. Definition of each QFlag can be found in the QFlag text file attached to this record. This dataset was produced by work supported jointly by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) lead NC40 Offshore Marine Monitoring project funded by Department of Environment, Food, & Rural Affairs (Defra) under its flagship marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (mNCEA) programme and by the Defra funded Carbon Management Project (project number MRD333).
